How to Draw a Cat in 6 Steps

Learn to Draw a Cat in 6 Easy Steps

Sometimes learning how to draw a cat can be hard. They’ve got eyes, ears, a nose and mouth. Where do all these features go? It can get overwhelming.

But not anymore…

Because I’ve been working round the clock to make drawing a cat super easy. I’ve broken it down into basic shapes and easy-to-follow steps so anyone can learn how to draw a cat.

The final cat drawing:

Step 1: Draw a Circle

Breaking things down into simple shapes is what makes drawing easy. Start by drawing a circle (the cat’s head). If you wanna get more practice at basic shapes before you start this, check out How to Draw Simple Shapes.

Step 2: Draw the Eyes

The next thing this cat needs is eyes. Draw two more circles to help the cat to see. I gave my cat some huge round pupils, but cats sometimes have little slits as pupils. So you could do that if you want.

Step 3: Draw the Cat’s Nose

More simple shapes incoming. A cat’s nose is just an upside down triangle. So draw one of those and have it overlap the left eye a little bit. That will give the drawing some depth.

Step 4: Give the Cat a Mouth

A cat’s mouth looks kinda like a soft “W.” Draw it right under the nose. I even gave him a little tooth to make him extra cute, but you don’t gotta.

Step 5: Draw the Cat’s Ears

More triangles make the perfect cat ears. Draw them and connect them to the cat’s head. Make sure you are erasing all your overlapping lines as you go.

Step 6: Add the Details

The last step is to give the cat some extra details. This part really helps to trick people into thinking you’re better at drawing than you actually are. Give the cat some random dots and scratches to add a little bit of visual interest. I also draw little lines around the outline to make the cat look a little fuzzy.

Bonus Step: Shade and Highlight the Cat

The next step is to do the flat colors. I went with an orange tabby, but you could make yours a tuxedo, tortoise, calico, or whatever kinda cat you want. After that, I shaded the cat and gave him highlights. A cat’s head is basically a sphere so if you want help shading and highlighting check out my How to Draw a Sphere tutorial.
