How to Draw a Puffer Fish in 5 Steps

Learn to Draw a Puffer Fish in 5 Easy Steps

Today I will be teaching you how to draw a puffer fish. It’s really not that hard once you break it down into simple shapes. I’ve broken down the process into 5 steps. That way anybody can learn how to draw a puffer fish.

The final puffer fish drawing:

Step 1: Draw a Circle

The first step of drawing a puffer fish is to draw one of the most basic shapes there is, the circle. I use circles all the time when I draw, you probably will too. Your circle doesn’t have to be perfect unless you want it to be. I like mine a little wonky because it adds some character to the puffer fish.

Step 2: Draw the Eyes and Mouth

The eyes and mouth are, you guessed it, more circles. I usually start with the mouth which is just an oval with a dot in the middle. Then I draw the right eye behind the mouth. That way, the left eye just becomes a curved line, which means you don’t have to erase as many overlapping lines. Give him pupils at this time too.

Step 3: Draw the Fins

Time to give this puffer fish drawing some fins. Fins are basically triangles. So draw some triangles then make the back side wavy.

Step 4: Give the Puffer Fish Some Spikes

Puffer fish are covered in little spiky things. So let’s add them in step 4 of how to draw a puffer fish. This is the perfect time to plug my How to Draw Cones drawing tutorial, but I haven’t made it yet so come back next week for that. Cones are triangles with curved bottoms. Draw them randomly all over the puffer fish and have them point in different directions.

Step 5: Scratch up the Puffer Fish

Add some final touches to this puffer fish drawing with some randomly placed scratches and dots. I even decided to give him eyebrows at this stage. Go as wild, or tame, as you want here.

Bonus Step: Color and Shade the Puffer Fish

A puffer fish is basically a sphere, which gives me another opportunity to plug one of my fundamental drawing tutorials, How to Draw a Sphere. Going there will give you an in-depth look at how to shade and highlight this puffer fish.

If you actually read this, that’s cool! If you only looked at the pictures, that’s cool too. I appreciate your time either way. I hope this simple puffer fish tutorial helped you learn how to draw a puffer fish quickly and easily.
