How to Draw a Sea Lion in 5 easy Steps

Step 1: Draw a Circle

The first step is always a simple shape. Drawing a sea lion is no different. Just draw a circle, and now you’re one step closer to having a sea lion drawing.

Step 2: Draw Hind Flippers

Draw the hind flippers on the back of your circle. Some overlapping teardrop shapes make a really hind flippers fin. Connect them to the circle and erase any overlapping lines before moving on to step 3.

Step 3: Draw The Front flippers

This sea lion needs some front flippers next, so let’s draw those. They kinda look like wings or something. It’s hard to explain so just copy the images below.

Step 4: Draw The Sea Lion’s Face

Now give the sea lion a face. I gave him a cute smile, but you can do whatever you want. Make him angry if you want.

Step 5: Draw the Details

Now draw some random scratches and dots all over your sea lion to make him look aged and weathered, and you’re all done. Nice!!

Bonus Step: Color the Sea Lion

Don’t stop here, it’s time to color your sea lion drawing. First, pick some flat colors. Then choose a light source and stick to it as you shade and highlight.

Can sea lions have different facial expressions?

Of course. You can change the eyes, eyebrows, and mouth to give your sea lion a completely different personality. Try making him happy, angry, surprised, sleepy, or just plain weird. A little change to the face can make a big difference.

What can I add to my sea lion drawing?

You can add all kinds of stuff around your sea lion to make the drawing more interesting. Try some waves, splashing water, bubbles, fish, rocks, or even another sea creature. You could also add some whiskers or extra scratches and details to the sea lion itself.

Can I give my sea lion different flipper shapes?

Definitely. You don’t have to keep your sea lion sitting in the same position as mine. Try tilting the body, changing the angle of the flippers, or making the sea lion look like it’s swimming or lying on the beach. Small changes to the pose can give you a completely different-looking sea lion.
