Step 1: Draw a Circle
If you’ve been here before, then you already know the first step. If not, get used to this: Draw a circle.
Step 2: Draw This Wormy thing
I use this worm shape to separate the top of the turtle shell from the bottom. It’s kinda hard to describe, so just draw the shape you see below.
Step 3: Draw The Turtle holes
Draw some half circles on the bottom of the turtle shell and fill them in black. I’m pretty sure the scientific name for these is turtle holes.
Step 4: Draw The Shell Design
When I was learning to draw turtle shells, this was always the hardest part for me, but I finally figured it out. It’s kinda like a soccer ball pattern, but not really. It’s another one that’s hard to explain. Just copy what you see below.
Step 5: Draw the Details
Now draw some random scratches and dots all over your turtle shell to make it look aged and weathered, and you’re all done. Nice!!
Bonus Step: Color the Turtle SHell
Don’t stop here, it’s time to color your turtle shell drawing. First, pick some flat colors. Then choose a light source and stick to it as you shade and highlight.

My turtle shell drawing doesn’t look right. How can I fix it?
If your turtle shell looks a little wonky, don’t worry about it. Take a look at the final drawing and see what’s different. Maybe your shell is too skinny, the pattern looks weird, or the turtle holes aren’t in the right spot. Just erase whatever you don’t like and try again. It’s a drawing, not a real turtle shell.
Can turtle shells have different patterns?
Yeah, turtle shells can have all kinds of different patterns. You don’t have to copy mine exactly. Try making the shapes bigger, smaller, or changing the pattern completely to make your turtle shell look different.
Can I draw my turtle shell in a different color?
Of course. I went with blue for mine, but turtle shells come in lots of different colors and patterns. Try brown, green, yellow, or whatever color you think looks cool. You could even make up your own weird turtle with a purple shell if you want.
