How to Draw a Goldfish in 5 easy Steps

If you’ve ever tried to learn how to draw a goldfish, you know how challenging it can be. Fins, eyes, mouth, where do all these fish parts go?!?!

Well don’t worry, because…

I’ve made learning how to draw a goldfish simple and easy. I break the drawing down into simple and easy to follow steps. I also use simple shapes that anyone can draw, which makes drawing goldfish a breeze.

The final goldfish drawing will look like this:

Step 1: Draw a Circle

Most of my drawing tutorials start the same way. If you’ve been here before, you already know where this is going. Draw a circle.

Step 2: Draw the Fish Face

Draw three more circles to create the fish’s face. I usually start with the right eye, then the mouth, then the left eye. After that, I draw another slightly smaller circle inside the mouth and fill it with teeth and a tongue.

Step 3: Draw The Tail

Draw a small rectangle on the back of the fish. Then draw a wavy tail fin.

Step 4: Draw The Fins

Time for the rest of the fins.

Step 5: Draw the Details

Now draw some random scratches and dots all over your goldfish drawing. I also added some scales to add even more texture.

Bonus Step: Color the goldfish

If you wanna go above and beyond the call of duty, you can color and shade your goldfish drawing. Pick some flat colors, I went with orange and reddish orange. After that choose a light source and stick to it as you shade and highlight. You could also download the coloring sheet if you’re not into drawing.

If your goldfish looks a little wonky don’t worry about it. Try looking at the final drawing and see what looks different. Maybe your eyes are too small, your body is too skinny, or your tail looks weird. Just erase whatever you don’t like and try again. It’s a drawing, not a goldfish surgery.

Can goldfish have different tail shapes?

Yeah, goldfish can have all kinds of different tails. Some are short and stubby while others are long and flowy. So don’t feel like you have to copy my tail exactly. Try drawing a few different ones and see which one you like best.

Can I give my goldfish a different expression?

Of course. You can change the eyes and mouth to give your goldfish pretty much any expression you want. Make him happy, angry, sad, confused, or whatever else you can think of. You could even give him a giant smile if you want your goldfish to look ridiculously happy.
